New Sermon Series: Jesus Is… and The 5 Solas

Jesus Is... (final)

Open Day and Mission Week at SLE Church have come and gone – but mission for each of us has not finished! Over the past few weeks as we have invited friends and family to various church events there’s been great and multiple opportunities to speak about who Jesus is. It seems there are as many answers to that question as there are friends and family. So we’re going to ask that question as well, and hear four responses from Jesus to that question in Matthew 11-12. This series will be a great follow up from Mission Week – so keep inviting friends and family to church as this series promises more opportunities to hear and share the gospel.

The 5 Solas

Following on from ‘Jesus Is…’ is a five week series into what we believe and stand for at SLE Church. The 5 Solas (Latin for ‘alone’ or ‘by oneself’) summarise the basic protest of a group of Christians (known as Reformers) in their writings and teachings as they sought to reform what they believed were the errors of the then Roman Catholic Church. This protest could distilled down to 5 main points: that scripture alone (sola scriptura) was the ultimate authority in the church and that sinners were saved by God’s grace alone (sola gratia), which is received through faith alone (sola fide), which is placed in Christ alone (solus Christus), all of which was done for the glory of God alone (soli deo gloria). This forms the basis of what is known as ‘Reformed Theology’.

In a slightly different order we’ll be exploring each of these ‘alones’ and prayerfully see how much they impact our thinking and lives today.

So there’s lots to look forward to in our Sunday gatherings over the next weeks. Keep praying for our hearts and minds as we come each week to hear God’s Word!
