In a time of increasing persecution and the need to persevere under trial, Sardis was a bright shining light: a church that had it all together. The envy of all other churches and the place to be when you came into town. It had built and sustained a good reputation among all.
Or so they thought.
The assessment of Jesus must have come as a shock to a church that had a good name for itself. But the warning Sardis faced is a warning we must heed: for the good name we have built may just as easily cover death and lifelessness.
