Back in Revelation 17, John, the author of this book, the one who was given these visions, is shown the judgement of Babylon that is to come. And now here in chapter 18, John is transported into the future where he hears the pronouncement that Babylon has fallen. The point of this chapter is that Babylon’s fall is certain. And it is thoroughly deserved. This city has done truly wicked things. As we hear of Babylon’s certain judgement to come, we’re all invited to see the tragedy and danger of falling to her seduction. Believers are called to come out of Babylon and not go down with her. We’re encouraged to keep loving Jesus, never loving the world. We’re invited to long for and rejoice in the day when justice comes. Those who aren’t believers are invited to see the tragedy of loving Babylon… and come to see that loving Jesus is so so much better.
