In the Beginning
In the beginning…
With those words, the Bible reveals the God who is there, who has made everything and has spoken that this story would be told from generation to generation. It is a familiar story, but one we must read and re-read again and again – for the echoes of the goodness in the story prepares us for our journey into the rest of the Bible’s story.
The Good and Orderly Creation
The one true God creates a good world powerfully by his words in an orderly way. We read and celebrate the creator who also creates humanity personally with the ultimate goal of rest with him.
Being Truly Human
God’s word in Genesis 2 shows us what it means to be truly human: we are created precious to God, given the purpose of doing the work of God in relationship with Him and with others.
Being Untruly Human
The de-godding of God leads to terrible consequences: curse, death, and exile. This moment explains why our experience of life is the way it is – and helps us yearn for the day of radical change.
Man and the Wilderness of Sin
We grieve as we see human sin’s ongoing and downward spiral is revealed in murder, violence and death, marvel at moments of grace, are warned about the paths of sin, and yearn for some relief to this situation.
Sin’s escalation comes to a peak in the time of Noah. Great sin results in great judgement, yet God graciously remains committed to His creation. Sadly, the dreadful human condition has remained the same after the flood, yet God in fulfilment of His commitment, saves through Jesus and promises an end to sinful corruption.
Cursed and Blessed Unity
We finish off this short sermon series in these foundational chapters of the Bible and of human history with one more picture of the human condition. Humanity’s sin is given expression as they unite in rebellion against God. Once again, we see God respond with judgement that is marked by grace. Not only that, we see God’s overflowing grace in promising blessing through one man that will overturn all of the curses.
